The North Western Indian State of Rajasthan has over one hundred fortifications on hills and mountainous terrain. Six Hill Forts of Rajasthan, spread across Rajasthan state in northern India, have been clustered as a series and designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ‘Hill Forts of Rajasthan’ was initially submitted to the UNESCO as a serial property formed by five Rajput forts in the Aravalli Range,^[1] and were built and enhanced between the 5th and 18th centuries CE by several Rajput kings of different kingdoms. The UNESCO series has been increased to six forts. They consist of:

Jaigarh Fort

Jaipur, Rajasthan

• Built By: Sawai Jai Singh
• Built in the Year: 1726
• Purpose: To protect the Amer Fort 
• Area: 3 km (1.9 mi) along the north–south direction and a width of 1 km (0.62 mi)
• Current Status: Amber fort was declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site
• Visit Timing: 09:00am – 04:45pm

Red Fort

Old Delhi

• Built By: Shah Jahan
• Built in the Year:1648
• Purpose: Main residence of Mughal emperors
• Area: 254.67 acres
• Architect: Ustad Ahmad Lahauri
• Architectural styles: Mughal, Indo-Islamic
• Current Status: UNESCO World Heritage Site
• Open: Tuesday-Sunday; Monday closed
• Timings: Sunrise to Sunset
• Sound & Light Shows: 6pm onwards in English and Hindi

Gwalior Fort

Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh

• Purpose: Constructed to honor a sage named Gwalipa
• Built in: Said to have existed since the 6th century; several structures built during the course of history
• Materials Used: Sandstone and lime mortar
• Area: 741.3 acres
• Current Status: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) looks after the fort

Agra Fort

Agra, Uttar Pradesh

• Built By: Akbar
• Built in the Year: 1573
• Purpose: Main residence of the Mughals
• Area: 380,000 square meter
• Current Status: The fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site
• Visit Timing: Sunrise to sunset
• Entry: Entry to Agra Fort is allowed through the Amar Singh Gate only

Chittorgarh Fort

Chittorgarh, Rajasthan

• Built By: Chitrangada Mori
• Occupants: Mauryas of Chittor, Guhilas of Medapata, Sisodias of Mewar
• Area: 691.9 acres
• Current Status: The fort has been declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site
• Visiting Time: 9:45AM – 6:30PM

Amber Fort

Jaipur, Rajasthan

• Built By: Raja Man Singh
• Built in the Year: 1592
• Materials Used: Red sandstone and marble
• Purpose: Main residence of the Rajput Maharajas
• Current Status: Amber fort was declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site
• Visit Timing: 8am – 5: 30pm
